The name is a little misleading. A “blank bullet” carries no actual bullet inside it. The bullet itself is the projectile that leaves the gun barrel, whereas a blank cartridge is built to mimic gunfire without sending anything forward. Rather than a metal tip, the mouth of the shell casing is closed off with wadding or crimping that keeps the gunpowder packed inside. Pull the trigger, the firing pin taps the primer, the propellant lights up, and out comes a burst of hot gases producing a vivid muzzle flash, a sharp muzzle report, and the familiar muzzle blast — minus any flying projectile.
