What Is a Blank Gun and How Does It Work?

A blank gun looks and feels almost exactly like a real firearm, but it works very differently. A blank firing pistol does not fire a projectile through the barrel, so it cannot be used for target shooting or anything that requires a live bullet. Instead of live ammunition, it uses blank Bullets containing gunpowder, which creates the loud bang, visible flash, and realistic recoil people associate with a real gun — without sending anything forward. To understand how a blank gun works, it helps to know the parts of a cartridge:
  • Case — the outer brass shell that holds everything together.
  • Primer — sits at the base; when the firing pin strikes it, it creates the spark that ignites the gunpowder.
  • Gunpowder (propellant) — burns rapidly to create pressure. In a real firearm this pressure pushes the bullet out; in a blank gun it simply creates the loud sound and flash.
  • Bullet — the projectile in a real cartridge. A blank cartridge has no bullet, which is what makes it non-lethal.
When the trigger is pulled, the firing pin hits the primer, the gunpowder ignites, and the gas needs a safe way to escape. This is where the two main designs differ:
  • Front firing blank guns release the gas and sound from the front of the barrel, giving the most realistic firing experience.
  • Top firing blank guns vent the gas upward instead.
Because there is no bullet, a blank pistol is mainly used for self-defence deterrence, firearm safety training, theatrical performances, signalling, and gun-handling practice.

Types of Blank Guns

There are several types of blank guns, each suited to a different purpose:
  • Semi-Automatic Blank Pistols — look and operate like real semi-automatic handguns and automatically chamber the next blank round after each shot. Ideal for training and self-defence simulations.
  • Revolver Blank Guns — feature a rotating cylinder holding several blank cartridges. Simple, durable, and popular with collectors and for theatrical use.
  • Automatic Blank Guns — fire continuously while the trigger is held (model dependent). Commonly used in film production and reenactments.
  • Starter Pistols — used in athletics to signal the start of a race. Loud sound, no projectile.
  • Front Firing Blank Guns — release sound and gas from the front barrel for maximum realism. Preferred for professional training and movie props.

Blank Guns for Self-Defence

Many South Africans choose a blank gun for self-defence because it produces a loud, gunshot-like sound, a visible flash, and a realistic appearance — without firing a live bullet. For situations where the goal is to scare off an attacker rather than cause harm, this can feel like a safer, non-lethal option. The loud noise can attract attention, startle an intruder, and give you a few critical seconds to move to safety or call for help. Blank guns are also easier to store and handle for basic personal safety awareness, and they help many people feel more confident at home. Used responsibly as a deterrent, a blank pistol is a practical personal-safety tool.

Are Blank Guns Legal in South Africa?

Blank guns are generally legal to own in South Africa when they are designed to fire blank cartridges only and cannot discharge a live bullet or projectile. Because they do not fire ammunition, they are treated differently from licensed firearms, which is why people use them for self-defence awareness, security, training, film, sports, and collecting. However, legal ownership does not mean careless use is allowed. A blank gun still looks and sounds like a real firearm, so it must be stored safely and used only for lawful purposes. Pointing one at someone as a threat, using it in public to cause panic, or attempting to modify it to fire live rounds can lead to serious legal consequences. Laws can change, so always check the latest South African regulations and buy only from a trusted seller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are blank guns legal in South Africa? Yes. Blank guns that fire blank cartridges only and cannot discharge a real bullet are generally legal to own in South Africa. They must be used responsibly and lawfully. Always check the latest regulations before buying. Do you need a license for a blank gun? Blank guns that cannot fire live ammunition are generally treated differently from licensed firearms. Because rules can change, we recommend confirming the current requirements with the relevant authorities or contacting us for guidance. Can a blank gun hurt someone? A blank gun does not fire a bullet, so it is non-lethal in normal use. However, the gas and flash are released at close range with force, so a blank gun should never be fired directly at a person or held against the body. What is the difference between front firing and top firing blank guns? A front firing blank gun releases gas and sound from the front of the barrel for a more realistic effect, while a top firing model vents the gas upward. How much does a blank gun cost in South Africa? Prices vary by brand and model. We stock several 9mm blank guns under R1000 and a range of models under R2000, with free blank bullets included on selected guns. Which blank gun is best for self-defence? Semi-automatic blank pistols such as the Blow range are among the most popular for self-defence because of their reliable build, realistic look, and easy handling. The best choice depends on your budget and how you plan to use it.
